Built into the wall of the church tower in Kirby Underdale is a small sculpted stone that appears to depict a facing figure of the Roman god Mercury. The two "horns" on the head gear are the wings on the petasus and the figure holds a purse and an unidentifiable object that is probably the remains of the caduceus.
The label suggests a military origin but as Mercury was the patron of merchants I think a civilian origin is more likely.
