11. Porta Praetoria and fortress wall

In St. Helen’s Square cobbles run across from Harkers Bar across to The Ivy restaurant. This marks the line of the wall of the Roman fort. 

In the basement of Harkers Bar there is a small amount of masonry remaining from the Porta Praetoria gate, the gate that led to the river crossing to the civilian settlement or vicus.

The marking of the line of the fortress wall in the roads and pedestrian areas is continued in New Street and Feasegate. The marking can be easily missed given the patched repairs of the York streets. 



The marking then continues, having turned 90 degrees, in Parliament Street, the brass plaque just visible in the picture below.
