Set into the wall of the building at the corner of Ousegate and Nessgate is a memorial reproducing the text of a Roman inscription.
A note above says that it is a copy of a inscription found at the site in 1840 that records the restoration or rebuilding of a temple dedicated to Hercules around AD 350.
The actual inscription is preserved in the Yorkshire Museum in York. Roman Inscriptions of Britain (RIB) records the inscription as entry number 648. A earlier date of 2nd or 3rd century AD is given by RIB to the monument and the date of discovery to 1839.
RIB also records two other Inscriptions from the site discovered at the same time, again both are in the Yorkshire Museum collection.
There is RIB 656.
There is also RIB 698.
