The village of Aldborough is located within the Roman town of Isauria Brigantum. The Church of St Andrew is thought to stand on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to Mercury, whose statue gazes down the full length of the 14th century nave. However, Mercury was the patron of merchants and so may have been in a domestic setting.
